Welcome to Off-Leash, a series spotlighting Biche’s community of tastemaking dogs and humans.

**A preface to this week's installment: Fragrance Developers help create, test, and finesse fragrance. They are essentially olfactory creative directors, translating a brand's vision to a perfumer, who composes the actual chemical formula of a scent. Now, meet Biche's Fragrance Developer, Carlos Huber.**

Carlos Huber is a Renaissance man. With degrees in architecture and historic preservation, he has a reverence for craft, heritage, and cultural exchange that’s evident in both his design work and his award-winning fragrance brand, Arquiste.

Specializing in what Carlos calls “olfactory restoration," Arquiste translates time, place, and memory into scent. Take Venice Rococo, inspired by the elaborate architecture of 18th-century Venice, or A Grove By The Sea, an ode to the fig and olive trees of Lopud, Croatia.

Carlos’s ability to evoke time, place, and nostalgia through scent is the first reason we knew he’d be the perfect fragrance developer for Biche. The second is his devotion to his dog, Chorizo, a five-year-old Miniature Dachshund.

“Andrew, my husband, has always been obsessed with Dachshunds,” Carlos says. One day, he surprised Andrew with a visit to a breeder in Croton-on-Hudson. “We played with Chorizo for a little bit and when Andrew asked him, ‘Are you a good boy?’ he looked straight into his eyes and licked his hand.”

Since then, Carlos and Andrew have fallen hopelessly in love with their four-legged child. “We cannot imagine our life without him… He’s our number one priority,” Carlos says. "Chorizo has so much personality; I’ve never met a more loving or friendly dog. We’ve learned to understand his barks, whines, and little happy cries. He’s our family, our little love."

We chatted with Carlos about his sweet celebrity crush (spoiler alert: It’s his husband, a rising star in the world of medicine) and his very fitting pet peeve. Plus, Chorizo issues a warning to birds and squirrels everywhere.
