Welcome to Off-Leash, a series spotlighting Biche’s community of tastemaking dogs and humans.

If you’re even somewhat online, chances are you’ve come across videos of well-heeled women flocking to Marc Jacobs with their dogs in tow. The reason? Grier Schmidt and her Miniature Dachshund, Bruce.

Grier, a former director at Marc Jacobs, launched the brand’s viral “Bark Jacobs” program, offering custom, hand-painted pet portraits on select handbags. Bruce played a small but instrumental role in the initiative: “He’d often come with me to the office and even starred in the Bark Jacobs campaign,” Grier says.

Since then, Grier has brought her expertise to Burberry, where she’s currently the Director of Client Engagement for the Americas. As for Bruce? He’s adjusted nicely to his life as a furry fashion icon.

You’d never guess it from his favorite napping spot — a Loro Piana couch — but Bruce comes from humble beginnings. After years of searching for a dog, Grier and her husband finally met their match on a small family farm in Canada. “We met him and said, ’that’s Bruce!’ We later came to discover that Bruce and I were born on the same day — twin flames.”

Ahead, we chat with Grier about Bruce’s love for Olivia Rodrigo and foreign cheese.
